Theme Decorating

It doesn’t have to be that way! Themed decorating can be quite tasteful and beautiful. It takes creativity and some work, but the results are well worth the effort. Here are some tips for creating great theme rooms:

• Choose a color scheme within your theme and stick to it. It’s fine to include different colors, prints, and textures as long as they coordinate with each other. Do not fall into the trap of purchasing everything you find that could possibly be incorporated into your theme, even if it does not coordinate with your overall design plan. If you find some item that you must have, make sure you can paint it or otherwise adapt it to compliment the rest of the room. When there is too much going on in a room, it creates chaos. The eye doesn’t travel smoothly around the room, and the space is not a soothing one that people enjoy spending time in. Injecting too many items, especially those that stand out or look like they don’t belong, is often what ruins an otherwise great theme room.
  
  
• There is such a thing as overkill, especially in theme rooms. Not every surface has to be covered with things that represent your theme. Limit the accents you choose to only those items you just can’t live without and those that are of the highest quality. If you find that you are accumulating too many things, return some or give them away to a design challenged friend.
  
  
• When you show off your theme room, you will find that other people want to get involved. For example, if you create a lovely “tearoom” everyone you know will start buying you teacups and other accessories. While these are thoughtful gifts, you will have too many items before you know it. There may come a time when you have to gently inform friends and relatives that you have run out of room and that while you love their gifts, you have no more space to expand your collection. A room that is overflowing with teacups and has tea accessories stuffed into every nook and cranny, no longer looks like an elegant tearoom. As your room fills up, you also have to start purging. Keep only the items you love the most and donate, give away, or sell the others.
  
  
• Remember that themes are a trend; they don’t last forever. Do not go over your budget when creating a theme room, because if you are like most home decorating enthusiasts, in a few years you will probably be ready to move on to a new theme or design plan. Try to incorporate classic pieces along with your themed pieces so at least some items can be re-used in your next room transformation.
  
  
• While it is important to follow certain guidelines, make sure you don’t take decorating too seriously. A theme room is supposed to be fun. Get creative and have a great time decorating. Enjoy your room and show it off. These guidelines should help you make the most of your theme, while still allowing you to enjoy the experience.
